They are a simple and effective way to communicate Epilepsy and can help avoid unnecessary emergency room visits after a seizure has occurred.
What is Epilepsy?
Epilepsy is a common condition that affects the brain and causes frequent seizures. Seizures are bursts of electrical activity in the brain that temporarily affect how it works, caused by a wide range of symptoms. This condition can start at any age but usually starts in childhood or in people over 60. In many cases, it’s lifelong but can sometimes get slowly better over time.
There are many types of seizure. Some seizures may have the patient alert on what’s going on around them, with other types the patient might lose awareness.
Epilepsy is one of the most common serious neurological conditions all over the world. It affects around 600,000 people in the UK alone, that’s almost 1 in 100 people in the UK have epilepsy. Around 87 people are diagnosed with epilepsy in the UK every day.
It can be caused by brain damage from a stroke, head injury or infection, brain tumours, problems with how the brain developed in the womb and genetic factors. In research, it is thought that our genes play a part in who does and who doesn’t develop epilepsy. This may explain why some people develop epilepsy with no clear cause.
When your loved one leaves the house always make sure they are wearing their medical ID bracelet. Make sure it can be easily spotted and avoid taking it off. You might think it cramps your style, but it can mean the difference between living a healthy life and suffering the consequences.
